This is the final blog of the series about the three causes of illness.  So far, I have covered inheritance and  constitution. Now I will explore the trigger for illness, which in many cases is often invisible. The trigger or underlying cause could be an event or ongoing stressor – physical, mental or emotional.

Physical  Causes of Illness

There are a whole host of physical causes. Here are some examples of causes, that I have seen in my practice and the illnesses they led to:

  • Accident or physical injury: e.g. a head injury that caused depression; or in the case of the woman in the BBC’s Doctor in The House, a car accident that caused extreme cluster headaches

  • Hormonal change e.g.menopause that caused anxiety, or in Carol Vordermann’s case – suicidal depression

  • Medical drugs e.g. the contraceptive pill that led to an inability to reestablish the menstrual cycle. I have also seen The Pill lead to depression, and too many antibiotics to a life-threatening gut infection called Clostridium Difficile

  • Traumatic birth: that led to night terrors, which extended into adulthood, and in another case, to digestive issues

  • Glandular Fever / Epstein Barr / Mononucleosis: which led to recurrent respiratory and gastric infections, or in another case, ongoing chronic fatigue

Mental & Emotional Causes of Illness

Mental and emotional causes are often “invisible”,  because conventional medics are not trained to look for them, or consider them a reality. But in my practice, I see many more mental / emotional causes than physical ones, regardless of whether the presenting symptoms are physical or emotional. And the cause can be an event or an ongoing situation, as you will see from these examples:

  • Shock or fright: e.g. a woman who had never had an issue with anxiety or insomnia developed  debilitating symptoms of both while pregnant and long after the birth, after the shock of a friend dying in pregnancy

  • Loss: e.g. being sent to boarding school, which led to separation anxiety well into adulthood

  • Emotional suppression: e.g. punitive, critical parenting that led to anxiety and digestive issues in adulthood; and in another client, to insomnia

  • Betrayal & humiliation: which led to arthritis

  • Abuse: e.g.being with an abusive, controlling partner, which led to recurrent urinary tract infections

Multiple Causes

Sometimes the causes are what I call “stacked” e.g. in one case heartbreak led to depression, which, when treated with antidepressants, led to Chronic Fatigue and Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

In homeopathy, establishing and treating the cause, is more important than treating the symptoms. Because if you can treat the cause, then the symptoms will resolve themselves.
